Making Sense of Math - and other things . . .

So, after the post I just wrote late last night, I think I need to fill in the space with something a little more positive--it's called Math Makes Sense.  That's the new focus for today--teaching my son long-division using the old-school method that I was taught, because in this instance, the Math Makes Sense approach doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me:(

Have I ever told you how much I loathe math?  I do.  And yet, here I am, teaching my son something that he will need to know in order move on.

I am in my pyjamas.  The house is a mess.  Mitchell is in his pyjamas.  The house is a mess.  Ty is home from school today because he's not feeling well.  There are so many things I normally would do on a day off from my regular job, but now that I'm homeschooling, those things are less of a priority.  Mitchell's education is the priority.  And I need to make the most of my days at home and use my time wisely.  I welcome the challenge because my son is so important to me:)

Good day!

You have a great attitude towards homeschooling your son. Try your hardest to hang onto that, because there will definitely be days where the "other stuff" tries its absolute best to undermine what you are doing. It becomes easier and easier to say, "Here, work on this just while I clean the bathroom" or for someone to ask you to babysit, because "Hey, you are just sitting at home anyway." Keep on top of the goal that you have committed yourself to achieving. I speak from years of experience of stumbling and God having to re-direct me...to the point of uprooting our family and taking us away from all of the distractions. Hang in there! You can do this...I know, because I can hear the commit to do right by your son in your words.

(For what it is worth...for all of the times that I have read about your son's struggles in school, etc. I have always been so tempted to shout out, "Oh please, just homeschool him!" but not having ever spoken to you in person or knowing your family, I didn't feel like I should be possibly over-stepping boundries. I was so happy to hear that you had brought him home for this year.)

Way to go, Kim. And sorry for not responding to your 2 previous posts. Lately I've been trying to NOT open the computer until the evening so that I spend the days working on my course. Which means, some days I spend VERY little time on the computer. It's good for me because it can be very addicting.
All that to say, I did READ your blog, I just didn't have time to reply to your blog. AND it was a GREAT blog about your life changes. SOOOO encouraging to read how God is walking with you in all this and how He is changing your attitude.
And I'm glad you're enjoying focusing on Mitchell and not worried about the housework. Yup, it's a JOY to give our kids priority!
Love you!

Hey Kim! Michelle has some excellent advice. Sometimes you just need to not worry about the housework. Sometimes I think that over the years I've almost become "too good" at that. You will do an awesome job with Mitchell, I know it!! And as far as the math, as long as you can teach it so that he can understand it and you get the same result, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Love you lots!
